Cost: FREE

Learn the craft of scat singing by building an understanding of the components and their functions. Participants will use their voices in imitation of an instrument and exploring the art of improvisation as it applies to vocal performance, particularly jazz.

Discover how although improvisational, the melodic lines are often variations on scale and arpeggio fragments, stock patterns and riffs, as is the case with instrumental improvisation.

Scat syllables are the key element of vocal jazz improvisation which also influences pitch articulation, coloration, and resonance of the performance. Enjoy an “impromptu” scat session at the end.

Who: Grades 3-8

Audience Maximum: 10 per session
